Car 031 shows the various incarnations a trolley can experience in its life. It began as a Cleveland streetcar, part of the same order as 1203, 1225, 12 and 024. Car 1231, as it was known then, went to the Shaker Rapid in 1920 after modifications. It now had electric heat, a multiple-unit controller for running in trains, faster motors and reconfigured seating. In 1949 it was further altered into a one-man PAYE (pay as you enter) style car with the addition of a front door. In 1955 it was deemed obsolete for passenger service and retired from that duty. It was transferred to the work car fleet and received a flat deck on the rear of the car. It spent the remainder of its time on the Rapid as a wire greasing and general work car. The car was retired in 1992. RTA thoroughly stripped it for parts to support cars 12 and 024. Its stripped body was purchased by a private owner and placed next to the former Baltimore and Ohio depot in Medina, Ohio. In 1996 it was donated to the Museum and moved from Medina to the Museum.
