With the gasoline age, motorized track cars gradually replaced handcars in track inspection and work service. This is one of the larger “speeders” built. Its four-cylinder engine is powerful enough to haul small 4-wheel flatcars loaded with ties and other supplies. After the wire came down on the Union Terminal system in 1952, this car was sold to CTS for use on the rapid transit. In 1960 a fire consumed the original wooden cab and ownership shortly afterward passed to the Shaker Rapid. They built the cab the car has today. It is the only remaining operating piece of equipment from the Cleveland Union Terminal rail system.
