Car 0518 was built in 1927 by the Differential Steel Car Company of Findlay, Ohio. They were a builder of electric railway work equipment. Side dump cars were the workhorses of trolley maintenance-of-way fleets. They could haul everything from bricks and ballast to construction debris to and from work sites along the lines. The dump body is powered by an electric motor which allows the body to dump left or right as needed.
After many years on the streets of Cleveland, it was transferred to the CTS Rapid. There it hauled ballast and other bulk items over the Rapid. It did this service in concert with sister car 0516. On occasion it also ventured onto the Shaker Rapid when needed.
In 1960 railroad enthusiasts rented this car for a fan trip. They rode on wooden planks set in the dump body as seating. The trip ran over the Shaker and CTS rapid lines. It was a ride like no other and was never repeated.
After its fantrip duties, it continued in more mundane service until 1979. At that time, it was retired. The RTA replaced it with a new hopper car and a side dump car that would be hauled around by a diesel locomotive. Car 0518 was acquired by the Museum in 1979 and moved to the museum campus.
