101 Shaker Heights Rapid Transit

101 5 & 0x main

Car 101 is a line car.  It is designed to give a platform for line crews to work on the overhead wires.  It also carries the supplies and tools those crews will need.  Shaker Heights Rapid Transit Line Car 101 started out its working life on the Eastern Michigan Railway.  The car was built for the line in 1923 by the Detroit United Railways as car 7763 using components from a former Detroit, Jackson & Chicago Railway car.  The Peckham trucks that support this car probably date to the late 1890s.  In 1932 in was sold to the Cleveland Interurban Railroad and placed in service on their Shaker Heights Rapid line where it was used to maintain the overhead.  It also functioned as a locomotive moving hopper cars and other railroad cars over the rapid for maintenance work.  It shared these latter duties with the 0X.  The car was retired from service in 1965.  The Ohio Railway Museum acquired it in 1966 and returned it to its original Eastern Michigan appearance.  NORM purchased the car from that Museum in 2011.  We plan on returning it to its Cleveland Interurban Railroad appearance.
