161 Cleveland Transit System

161 at central rail 4 29 84 main

In 1968 the CTS Rapid was extended to Cleveland Hopkins Airport.  The line’s original fleet of 1954 and 1958 built cars lacked the capacity needed for the extended route, so large capacity cars were ordered from Pullman Standard.  Car 161 was part of a fleet of 25 cars, numbered 151-170, to inaugurate service on the extension.  In honor of the new airport service, they became known as Airporters.  These cars had baggage racks to hold flyers’ luggage.  The car had a short service life on the line.  After consolidation into the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, new cars were ordered from the Tokyu Car Company of Japan to replace all the cars on the line.  It was retired from regular service in 1985 after only 17 years of active service.

After retirement in 1985, this car was one of two Airporters reactivated in 1988 for a special 20th anniversary celebration of Airport Rapid Transit service.  Cleveland was the first city in the western hemisphere to have direct downtown-to-airport Rapid Transit service.
