The 1968 extension of the west side Rapid to the Airport was a great success for the Cleveland Transit System. This extension increased ridership beyond projections. In 1970 CTS returned to Pullman Standard for ten additional cars to meet ridership demands. These cars were 171 to 180. These cars were identical to the fleet of 20 cars purchased in 1967 with one noticeable exception, the end windows were smaller. The large end windows of the first fleet of cars proved to be a very enticing target for line side rock throwers. The window size was reduced to lessen the target area.
Car 172 is the only survivor from the second fleet of cars purchased. Originally it was retained by the RTA as part of a heritage fleet. Eventually RTA decided that a heritage fleet was not needed. It was then donated to the startup Lake Shore Electric Railway Museum to be in downtown Cleveland. When this fledgling Museum, born from the demise of Trolleyville,U.S.A. decided to dissolve, the car became the property of our Museum. The movement of the car from Cleveland to our Museum campus made it onto the evening TV news. Video of the move can be seen on the museum You Tube Channel.
