This tank car probably never ran on an electric railroad, but it is representative of the many tank cars that did. Many interurban lines interchanged with steam railroads and hauled heavy freight using steam railroad compatible cars. Box motors or electric locomotives would haul these cars to customers’ sidings. This car does have a “back door” electric railway connection. Cities Service Pipeline Co. was a part of the larger Cities Service Co. a holding company. This larger company had an electric utilities division among its holdings. This division owned the Lake Shore Electric interurban from 1927 until abandonment in 1938.
