512 Cleveland, Southwestern and Columbus Railway Co.

Freight was part of electric trolley service from the beginning.  Before 1900 streetcars were already hauling everything from newspapers and small packages to the U.S. mail.  The interurban railroads were well adapted to carry light package freight and perishable food items like milk and produce.  Cars like this were a farmer’s friend.  Soon box motors were hauling trains of box trailers in the dead of night, when quiet streets and light passenger traffic made freight runs less intrusive.  CS&C 512 is such a car.  With its rounded ends and wide swinging radial couplers, 512 could handle sharp street railroad curves and switches.
