78 Shaker Heights Rapid Transit

Spangler005 main

Car 78 was built by Pullman Standard with operation on the Shaker Rapid in mind.  Since clearance issues dictated by street operations did not limit Shaker cars, they could take advantage of several options available.  To increase passenger capacity, these cars had a 9-foot wide body capable of holding four seats across.  These cars are 8 inches wider than a standard PCC designed for street running.  They were also 4 feet longer than a standard PCC.  A center door on the left side was included for the proposed downtown Cleveland subway.  Multiple-unit equipment allowed trains up to 5 cars to be operated.  Finally, these cars featured slightly larger and wider wheel treads for high speed service on open track.

This car and all the Pullman built PCCs were delivered with full skirting which featured hinged rectangular doors for maintenance access.  After years of use the hinges had rusted and were very difficult to open.  As a result, the doors were removed on many of the cars over the years.  After the line was taken over by the RTA, shop crews cut the skirts to match the classic flowing arch style seen on many PCC cars.

Since the downtown subway never was built.  Shaker further increased seating capacity by placing a longitudinal seat in the space occupied by the never used left door.
