Homeschool co-op group gathered for an educational field trip at the Northern Ohio Railway Museum in Seville.

From Carbarn to Classroom: Homeschoolers on Campus

The rings of the trolley bell and the sound of footsteps on wooden floors filled the museum this week as we hosted our first large-scale field trip of the 2026 season. We had nearly 100 visitors join us from the local homeschooling community, making for a day of exploration that spanned generations.

Hosting a group of this size is a great reminder of why we preserve these massive pieces of transportation history. It is one thing to see a photo of an electric interurban car in a history book, but it is a completely different experience to stand inside one and realize just how much these machines changed the way people lived and worked a century ago.

An Educational Experience for All Ages

One of the highlights of the day was seeing how the museum naturally accommodates students of different levels. In a homeschooling environment, you often have toddlers and teenagers learning side-by-side. We worked to ensure our presentations met that challenge, offering something for everyone.

The younger children were fascinated by the sheer scale of the cars and the tactile details of the vintage interiors. Meanwhile, the older students and parents engaged with the deeper mechanical engineering that powered our region’s growth. By walking through the carbarns and seeing cars in various stages of restoration, the group got a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to keep history in motion.

Safety and Stewardship

As part of our commitment to the community, we included rail safety education in the day’s activities. Ensuring that students understand how to safely navigate around tracks and active rail environments.

We also discussed the importance of preservation. Seeing the craftsmanship of the early 20th century up close helps students appreciate the value of stewardship and the work required to protect our local heritage.

Planning Your Group Visit

This event was a perfect kick-off to our season, and we are looking forward to welcoming more educational groups throughout the year. Whether you are part of a homeschool co-op, a traditional classroom, or a community organization, the museum offers a unique, hands-on environment that brings the past into the present.

We are currently booking group tours for 30 or more people. Each visit is an opportunity to tailor the experience to your group’s specific interests, from technical history to the daily lives of Ohioans in the 1900s.

If you are looking for a unique field trip destination near Medina, Akron, or Cleveland, we invite you to reach out. Our 2026 season officially opens to the public on May 23, but we are scheduling private group dates now.
