The Northern Ohio Railway Museum loves welcoming homeschool families, co-ops, and learning pods for both public and private visits centered around our historic electric railway collection and streetcar rides.
Whether you are looking for a dedicated group field trip or an easygoing family outing, we can help you plan a visit that gives students an opportunity to explore the technology, history, and people behind Ohio’s electric railways.
Two Ways to Visit
- Private Field Trips (Groups of 30+): To give student groups our full attention and a quiet environment away from weekend crowds, groups of 30 or more can book private guided visits on exclusive Thursdays when the museum is closed to the general public.
- Regular Operating Days (Smaller Groups & Families): Smaller co-ops, pods, and independent families are always welcome to join us during our regular operating hours to explore at your own pace.
Learning for Students, Parents, and Grandparents
A homeschool visit is a learning experience for the whole family. Students, parents, grandparents, and siblings can explore the museum together, and everyone counts toward the group total for private visits. Discounted adult admission makes it possible for the whole family to take part.
Meet the Experts
Our visits give students an opportunity to meet the people who care for and operate our historic railway equipment. Students can talk with conservationists about the craft of restoring vintage equipment, speak with operating crews about the systems that make electric railways work, and learn from our educators about the history and science behind the collection. These conversations give students a chance to ask questions and see how history is preserved through hands-on work.
Take a Trolley Ride
A ride aboard one of our historic streetcars is an essential part of the experience. Students can hear the hum of the electric motors, feel the movement of the car on the tracks, and experience the sounds of a working electric railway. For students who have explored the collection, the ride provides an authentic way to experience the technology they have been learning about.
